Freemasonry in the Province, which covers the Scottish Local Authority area of Inverclyde, has a long and honourable history dating back to 1728 and while the Provincial Grand Lodge of Renfrewshire West was actually formed in 1826 (Grand Lodge Minute 6th February 1826 refers), it could be argued that the first Provincial Grand Lodge in Scotland was established here on 3rd February 1739, when Alexander Drummond,, Collector of Customs, Greenock and Master of Lodge Greenock Kilwinning No. 15 (later renamed Lodge Greenock Kilwinning No. XII) was appointed by John Keith, 3rd Earl of Kintore, the then Grand Master Mason, to supervise the “West Country Lodges”, which included, the Counties of Renfrew, Argyll, Stirling, Dunbartonshire, “Clydesdale” and Inverness

Ayrshire is an old and historical county and has traditionally comprised of three areas, Carrick to the South, Kyle in the centre and Cunningham to the North. The Coats of Arms of these ancient provinces are incorporated in the seal of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Ayrshire. There are 44 Daughter Lodges in the Province situated from Girvan in the South to Skelmorlie in the North, from Ayr in the West to Muirkirk in the East, each Lodge being unique and distinct from the others.

Since its formation in 1739, the Provincial Grand Lodge of Ayrshire has been active in the promotion of the ideal that “Freemasonry makes a good man a better man”.

Although we are one of the more northerly Provinces in Scotland - (our Province extends from the North Sea on the east coast to the Atlantic on the west coast) - we are nevertheless delighted to welcome Brethren from home and abroad into our Province.

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Sutherland is the governing body   for six lodges within the County of Sutherland, this is a widespread area, not heavily populated, in fact, quite the opposite. The 2001 Census   states that Sutherland has a total population of 13,778. Of this, approx 8000 people live in settlements of over 800 people (Helmsdale, Brora,   Golspie, Dornoch and Lairg), and the rest live in smaller towns, villages and crofting communities. With its small, scattered population, Sutherland   does not have any extensive built-up areas.   There are Masonic Lodges in 6 of its main villages, these are Brora, Durness, Dornoch, Golspie, Helmsdale and Lairg. Membership of the Provincial   Lodge is open to any Master Mason who wishes to join, Masters and Wardens of the Daughter Lodges are automatic members, their membership being paid   for by their respective Mother Lodges. Even so the attendance at Provincial meetings is extremely low. Every year the Provincial Master and his   Office Bearers must visit the Daughter Lodges to ensure that they are keeping within the Laws and Regulations of the Grand lodge of Scotland. Each   Lodge is run to very strict rules concerning membership, records and finance and all these are inspected on each annual visit.
